The Vienna Technical Museum has been an institution of national importance
in Austria for more than a century. In 1989 the museum closed for long
needed renovations. In the summer of 1999 the first stage reopened to
the public.
Among the galleries to open were two which concentrated on the interactive
communication of the principles of science, particularly as it relates
to the topics covered in the rest of the museum. These galleries are
titled "Phenomena and Experiments" and "Concepts and
Consequences".
In the second half of 1998 Concepts Plus won contracts to develop ten
interactive exhibits for the new galleries. Many of these exhibits are
computer based, which is our specialty. Nevertheless, a number of the
exhibits are purely electro-mechanical, and the computer exhibits, of
course, have an electro-mechanical aspect with custom developed input
devices and user interfaces.
The briefing set out the functional requirements of the exhibits including
a concept design. We refined this concept and went on to the detailed
planning and testing of the ideas. The contract called for a turn-key
approach including planning, design, project management, programming,
fabrication, testing and finally installation and commissioning in the
museum.
