Start the wave generator and adjust the frequency of the silicone oil waves. You can experiment by sliding different obstructions into the path of the waves. Particularly interference, defraction and reflection can be observed on the projection screen under the tank.
The exhibit was built in 1999 for the Technical
Museum, Vienna and needed to function largely without supervision.
To that end the tank is fully closed with a glass plate above and below,
necessary to allow light to be projected through the waves. The obstructions
slide in from the side in tracks let into the lower glass plate, and
the handles with which they are moved are dampened to restrict speed
and fully mechanically isolated from the sliders to protect the glass.
The wave generator is also isolated from the exhibit housing in order
to stop unwanted vibrations from reaching the tank.
